Shillong: Following a violation by members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) at Lum Survey in Shillong, Meghalaya Home Minister Prestone Tynsong stated on Monday that their actions were a gross violation of the law.
While emphasising that the government does not support sheltering alleged illegal settlers, Tynsong insisted that legal procedures must be followed.
Tynsong said that he directed the Deputy Commissioner to hold a joint meeting as the area falls under the Cantonment Board, and the appropriate authority is the Defence State Officer.
“That day the members of HYC without consulting, we understand sentiments of the youngsters, they are emotional and felt that demolition is a simple issue, just go throw and dismantle and that’s it but law is there, and it will take its own course,” said Tynsong.

As the matter is scheduled for a court hearing on Tuesday, Tynsong reiterated that the HYC’s actions were a gross violation. However, he stressed that the matter is sub judice, and the next steps will depend on the court’s decision, which will then be followed by both state and central governments.
“Therefore, would request all concerned don’t take law into your own hands since it will lead to a lot of complications and this doesn’t mean government is sleeping over the issue we wanted to resolve and wanted to verify if they belonged to India or not, but we can’t say much since certification and verification is still on,” explained the home minister.
