Shillong: Scammers targeting citizens in Shillong, Meghalaya. have adopted a new strategy, posing as agents of courier services and deceiving customers by claiming that consignments in their name contain contraband substances.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP), Sylvester Nongtnger, issued a cautionary statement on Monday, urging citizens to remain vigilant.
In the statement, SP Nongtnger revealed, “It has come to light that scamsters are posing as agents of courier services such as FedEx and calling targeted citizens, informing them that consignments in their name contain contraband substances. Additionally, the scamsters also involve others, using the names of Central Law Enforcement Agencies such as Customs, CBI, NCB, etc., who claim that the target’s credentials are being used for money laundering and needs to transfer large amounts to an account, which they allege is for RBI clearance.”
To add to the scare tactics, the scammers often threaten arrest in most cases. In certain instances, targets are instructed to register online complaints through apps like AnyDesk, which may be exploited to dupe unsuspecting victims.

SP Nongtnger advised the public not to download apps from unsolicited callers and urged them to verify if they receive calls regarding unordered items. He emphasised the importance of reporting any such incidents to the respective police station to verify the authenticity and facilitate further police action.
Citizens were encouraged to report such matters to the Cybercrime helpline at 1930 and the Police Control Room in Shillong at 0364-2215427 and 6009196479.
