Imphal: A 34-year-old man was killed and three others injured after suspected armed militants opened fire at Langka (Taniuluang) Naga village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Friday morning, days after Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited the district as part of efforts to promote peace.
According to sources, several suspected Kuki armed militants, reportedly armed with sophisticated weapons, attacked the village at around 8 am.
Village volunteers retaliated, leading to an exchange of fire between the two sides.
During the attack, Wiriliangbou Chawang, 34, sustained a gunshot wound to the head and died on the spot, sources said.
Three other villagers — Kawidinang Abonmai, 55, Maliangjinang Abonmai, 52, and Namthiulungbou Prinmai, 50 — sustained serious injuries in the attack. All three are residents of Langka village.
The injured are likely to be shifted to Imphal for further medical treatment, sources said.
There has been no official statement from the police or security forces regarding the incident so far.
The fresh violence comes days after Chief Minister Khemchand Singh visited Kangpokpi district and held discussions aimed at advancing peace and restoring normalcy in the conflict-affected region.
