Imphal: The Noney district administration has constituted a Highway Patrol Team to enhance the safety and security of commuters along National Highway-37 by curbing extortion, facilitating regular road maintenance and ensuring the smooth movement of traffic.
The initiative was taken by Noney Deputy Commissioner Vidhyamari Sridhar.
According to the district administration, the Highway Patrol Team comprises an Executive Magistrate from the district administration, officials of the Manipur Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), and representatives of road contracting agencies engaged in the construction and maintenance of NH-37.
The team will conduct regular patrols and inspections along the highway to prevent illegal extortion, address issues affecting commuters, monitor the progress and quality of ongoing road maintenance works, and ensure effective coordination among all stakeholder agencies. It will also facilitate the prompt resolution of issues that may disrupt the safe and uninterrupted movement of vehicles.
The district administration stated that the safety and security of commuters travelling along NH-37 remain a top priority. It added that all concerned departments and agencies have been directed to work in close coordination to maintain law and order, improve road conditions, and provide a safe travel environment for the public.
Deputy Commissioner Vidhyamari Sridhar appealed to transporters, commercial vehicle operators and members of the public to cooperate with the Highway Patrol Team and immediately report any incidents of extortion, intimidation or other unlawful activities to the nearest authority.
The district administration reiterated its commitment to ensuring that NH-37 continues to serve as a safe, reliable and efficient lifeline for the people of Manipur.
