Ukhrul: Tensions flared in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Saturday after an Assam Rifles convoy allegedly rammed through a village gate at Talui, leaving at least two civilians injured.
According to local sources, the incident occurred around 1 pm when a convoy of Assam Rifles vehicles, reportedly coming from the Ukhrul district headquarters, forced its way through barricades set up by villagers. The barriers had been erected by local residents, primarily women, as a precautionary measure amid the ongoing tensions in the hill district.
Sources further claimed that security personnel fired several rounds while passing through the village, disregarding civilian safety, and continued towards Hoomi village for reasons that remain unclear.
Before reaching Hoomi, locals reportedly attempted to stop the convoy, but personnel allegedly opened fire again, injuring another individual.
Both injured civilians were rushed to Ukhrul District Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, during a press conference held at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Saturday evening, this EastMojo correspondent raised queries regarding the incident.
Responding to the query, Manipur Home Minister K. Govindas termed it an “unfortunate incident” and noted that similar occurrences have been reported not only in the hill areas but also in the valley districts.
