The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has secured a landslide victory in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, making history as the first party to win more than 11 out of 19 seats.

The party won 17 seats, leaving both the Congress and the Mizo National Front (MNF) with just one seat each. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), despite fielding 11 candidates, failed to secure a single seat.

The result marks a sharp shift from the previous election in 2021, when the MNF had emerged victorious with 11 seats while ZPM had won six. This time, the MNF, which had been the dominant force in the civic body, was reduced to a single ward. The Congress also managed to secure one seat.

The AMC is the urban local governing body responsible for civic administration in Aizawl, overseeing services such as sanitation, waste management, local infrastructure and urban planning.

Established in 2010 under the Mizoram Municipalities Act, 2007, the corporation consists of 19 wards, of which six are reserved for women. In this election, all six reserved seats were won by ZPM.

Historically, the Congress won the first AMC elections in 2010, while the MNF went on to dominate the next two elections in 2015 and 2021.

The latest polls, held on April 21, recorded a voter turnout of 62.77 per cent out of an electorate of 2.39 lakh.
