Arunachal: Family alleges torture before 12-year-old student’s death

Imphal: In a fresh wave of tension in Manipur, a man from Kakching district who was abducted by suspected armed Kuki militants was found murdered near T Natjang village in Churachandpur district, police said.

The victim has been identified as Mayanglangbam Rishikanta (38), a resident of Kakching Khunou. His body was seen lying on the ground in a viral video purportedly released by the kidnappers.

The abductors are suspected to be militants of the United Kuki National Army (UKNA), a non-signatory to the Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact signed between the Centre, the Manipur government, and several Kuki and Zomi militant groups.

According to police, on Wednesday evening at around 6:30 pm, Mayanglangbam Rishikanta, husband of Chingnu Haokip, was kidnapped by armed miscreants suspected to be UKNA from Tuibong in Churachandpur district.

As per his wife, who belongs to the Kuki community, Rishikanta had reached Churachandpur on January 19.

Police recovered the body and it has been kept at the district morgue. A suo motu case has been registered in connection with the incident, and an investigation is underway.
