Ukhrul: The 13th General Conference-cum-34th General Assembly and General Election of the Tangkhul Catholic Youth Federation (TCYF) began on Thursday at Mary Help of Christians Church in Hunphun village, Ukhrul district.
Held under the theme “You are the Chosen Generation” (1 Peter 2:9), the biennial conference will continue till January 12, 2026. The event is one of the largest gatherings of Tangkhul Catholic youth and serves as a platform for spiritual renewal and fellowship
Nearly 1,000 delegates from around 35 Catholic churches across Ukhrul and Kamjong districts are participating in the conference this year.
Rev Fr Mark Kumshang, principal of Holy Cross School, Kakching Khunou, was the main celebrant at the inaugural function.
Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) national president Conrad Sangma was scheduled to attend the inaugural ceremony as chief guest on Friday but could not be present due to official engagements.
In a recorded video message, Sangma expressed hope that the conference would motivate and inspire Tangkhul youth in the days ahead and encouraged them to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. He also urged the youth to come together in prayer for Manipur, keeping in mind the hardships currently faced by the people of the state, and conveyed his best wishes for the successful conduct of the conference.
Meanwhile, Regina Hongray, additional secretary (Works/MAHUD), Government of Manipur, officially released the TCYF constitution in the presence of president-in-charge Dominic Thuisem Shingnaisui.
Addressing the gathering, Hongray said that God has created every individual with a purpose and stressed the responsibility of discovering that purpose in life.
“Youth is one of the best phases of our lives, but it is also the most crucial stage in shaping our future,” she said, emphasising the importance of faith in building confidence and guiding life choices. She urged the youth to carry out their responsibilities with dedication and commitment, adding that living a life filled with regrets is the most futile thing one can do.
The inaugural programme also featured a cultural performance by the youth of St Joseph Church, Talui village, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Tangkhul community.
