Manipur: AFSPA reimposition a relief for some in Jiribam

Imphal: Following a surge in violent incidents, the Manipur government has reinstated the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in several districts, including Jiribam.

The decision comes after a period of relative peace in the region was shattered by sporadic killings, house burnings, and gunfights.

Jiribam, a district known for its diverse population of Bengalis, Bishnupriyas, Muslims, Meiteis, Hmars, and Kukis, had remained an island of peace during the first wave of conflict in 2023. However, since May 2024, the district has experienced a series of violent incidents attributed to “inimical elements”

As per the 38 Assam Rifles, the re-imposition of AFSPA has been met with a sense of relief among Jiribam’s residents, who hope that the security forces, particularly the Assam Rifles, will be able to quell the violence. The Assam Rifles have a long history of maintaining peace in the region, engaging with local communities, and providing aid during times of crisis.

They said that the security forces are planning large-scale operations to prevent further escalation of violence in the district.
