Imphal: Tensions in Manipur escalated on Saturday as angry residents took to the streets in various parts of Imphal Valley, protesting against the killing of six missing persons, including three children, in Jiribam.
On Friday evening, security forces recovered three bodies from the confluence of the Jiri and Barak rivers. The bodies are believed to be among the six internally displaced persons (IDPs) who had gone missing on November 11 in Jiribam district. The remains were sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Assam for autopsy and identification.
On Saturday, three more bodies were recovered but had yet to be transported to Silchar for autopsy.
Following reports of the discovery of the six bodies, protests erupted across Imphal Valley, including at Ima Keithel, where locals expressed outrage over the killings of the hostages, allegedly by Kuki armed militants.
Vehicular movement in Imphal was severely disrupted, and business establishments shut down by midday as protests spread across the region. Protestors attempted to march towards the Chief Minister’s bungalow and Raj Bhavan, but heavy security was deployed at all entry points leading to the CM Secretariat and Raj Bhavan to prevent any breach.
Protestors also stormed the residence of BJP MLA RK Imo Singh at Sagolband in Imphal West, demanding justice for the six victims. Additionally, the demonstrators targeted the Saingai Express building, a local newspaper office adjacent to the residence of MLA Nishikant Sapam on Tiddim Road. Security forces stationed in the area managed to contain the situation.
Intense protests were also reported from Kakching and Bishnupur districts, with demonstrators demanding justice for the slain IDPs and action against those responsible for the killings.
In response to the escalating tensions, the state government imposed an indefinite curfew in Imphal West, Imphal East, and Bishnupur districts with immediate effect. Internet services were also suspended for two days starting from 5:15 pm on Saturday in Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, and Kangpokpi districts.
The Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) strongly condemned the killing of innocent women and children in Jiribam. MSCW had previously appealed for their safe release. The commission reiterated that every woman has the right to live without fear, describing the killing of innocent women and children as an act of cowardice. The MSCW also extended condolences to the bereaved families.
