Kamjong: Deputy Commissioner of Kamjong district, Rangnamei Rang Peter, launched the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) on Tuesday at the Sadbhavana Mandap in Kasom Khullen sub-division, Manipur.
Kamjong district is among the 272 districts across 32 states and union territories identified as the most vulnerable in terms of drug usage in the country. These districts were pinpointed based on findings from the Comprehensive National Survey and inputs from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
According to the National Comprehensive Survey conducted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, over 60 million people in India use drugs, with a significant number in the 10-17 age group.
Speaking at the event, DC Rangnamei Rang Peter stated that the main objective of launching the NMBA is to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drugs among the general public, especially the youth. He emphasized that the future of the new generation is in jeopardy due to the rising number of young drug users.
“The biggest enemy of our youth is drugs and other psychotropic substances, which have eroded the social fabric,” the DC remarked. He also noted that drug-related deaths and crimes have increased significantly over the last few years, a problem that cannot be solely blamed on the government and law enforcement agencies.
DC Rangnamei Rang Peter further stressed the importance of parents, teachers, and community leaders in combating drug abuse among the youth.

During the function, the Deputy Commissioner also launched the Long Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN) initiative for the prevention of mosquito-borne diseases.
Chief Medical Officer of Kamjong, Dr. Lucy Duidang, and District Social Welfare Officer, A. Tamphasana Chanu, also spoke extensively about the causes and harmful effects of drug abuse. The programme was attended by the Superintendent of Police, Sub-Divisional Officer, District Malaria Officer, the headman of Kasom Khullen, students, and teachers.
