Manipur: Heavy hailstorm damages houses, crops in Senapati

Senapati: Severe weather conditions struck Senapati district, Manipur, on Tuesday, causing widespread devastation of houses and crops due to heavy rainfall accompanied by hailstorms.

Reports indicate that the hailstorms hit Mao and its surrounding areas, including Chingmei Khullen village and Laii village under Paomata sub-division in Senapati district, around 3:30 pm.

Additionally, hailstorms were also reported from Sangkunglung, Chakha, and Willong Khunou under Willong sub-division.

The calamity caught residents off guard, leaving them grappling with the aftermath of the devastation. Hailstones, the size of marbles, pelted down relentlessly, covering streets, rooftops, and vehicles with thick blankets.

Strong thunderstorms accompanying the hailstorm also caused significant damage, blowing away several houses and leaving residents without shelter.

The destruction extended beyond homes, as numerous vegetables and fruits, crucial for the villagers’ livelihoods and at the peak of harvest, suffered extensive damage. This exacerbates the economic impact of the natural disaster on the affected communities.

In response to the disaster, villagers have appealed to the concerned department to dispatch an enquiry team promptly to assess the extent of destruction and address the urgent needs of the affected villagers.

No injuries or casualties have been reported from the disaster as of the time of this report.
