Arrested for extortion in Arunachal

Dibrugarh, April 29: Four individuals have been arrested for allegedly threatening companies working on the Dibang Multipurpose Hydroelectric Project in Arunachal Pradesh’s Roing.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Ngurang John, Gangte Hamak, Tai Apa, and Tassar Kossum.

Taking to X, Minister for Public Health Engineering and Water Supply Mama Natung wrote: “I commend the LDV Police and Roing Police for successfully apprehending four extortionists who were threatening companies working on the Dibang Multipurpose Hydroelectric Project. Such criminal activities will not be tolerated.”

“We are committed to maintaining zero tolerance towards anti-social elements. Law and order is the foundation of development, and we remain committed to ensuring a safe and conducive environment for infrastructure projects that are vital for the progress of our state,” the minister said.

During the operation, police seized one SBBL gun, one .177 air gun, one .32 MK pistol, 15 live cartridges, one magazine loaded with seven .32 cartridges, and a leather holster containing eight live cartridges.

Officials also recovered mobile phones, cash, a diary, one round seal, a stamp pad, and other documents.

Sources said the four individuals had been involved in extortion-related activities and had sent extortion letters to major companies.

“We have arrested the persons for involvement in extortion activities, and we have also received complaints against them. We have started our interrogation,” a police official said.
