Sikkim today observed the 59th Nathu La Vijay Diwas with a grand ceremony at Nathu La Pass, marking India’s triumph over Chinese forces in 1967. Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur graced the event as Chief Guest, alongside Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.
The day began with tributes at the Sherathang War Memorial, where the Governor laid a wreath and lit the Amar Jyoti in memory of the fallen soldiers. He later unveiled the statue of Lt General Sagat Singh, who led the Indian Army to victory in the 1967 clashes at Nathu La and Cho La.
In his address, the Governor described the occasion as a golden chapter in India’s military history, calling Sagat Singh’s courage and foresight an enduring inspiration. He also thanked the Chief Minister for institutionalising the day as “Nathu La Vijay Diwas,” a proposal he had made last year.
The ceremony was attended by Sagat Singh’s family, senior Army officials, and dignitaries from Rajasthan. His family members were also felicitated by the Indian Army.
