Agartala: A late-night altercation at the new MLA hostel in Agartala has sparked controversy, with Tipra Motha legislator Philip Kumar Reang alleging a serious security breach.
Reang claimed that around 10 pm on Monday, a group of three to four intoxicated men confronted him outside his room inside the high-security complex.
“The new MLA hostel is not safe for MLAs. I was threatened in front of my room by unknown persons. Who will take responsibility for such lapses?” he wrote on social media and later repeated the allegation before reporters.
Director General of Police Anurag rushed to the hostel soon after the incident to review the security situation. However, the police chief denied any breach, clarifying that the individuals were invited by another legislator.
“Three people have already been identified. They were guests of an MLA. An argument broke out when MLA Philip Reang met them. Adequate security is in place and no unauthorised person is allowed inside. A proper investigation will be conducted,” he told the media.
On Tuesday, a delegation of Tipra Motha MLAs, led by Minister Brishaketu Debbarma, met Chief Minister Manik Saha demanding strict action. Debbarma said such incidents inside a secured zone could create a wrong impression about the state’s law-and-order situation, especially ahead of the upcoming ADC elections.
The police are probing the sequence of events, while the matter has sparked debate over security arrangements at the MLA hostel.
