The Government of Assam will mark the 100th birth anniversary of Bhupen Hazarika with a year-long series of events starting from 8 September 2025. The inaugural ceremony will be held at the Veterinary College Playground in Khanapara, Guwahati, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend as the Chief Guest.
Preparations for the centenary tribute are underway across the state. The Assam government has announced plans for a large-scale cultural programme on the inaugural day, including a performance by 1,000 artistes who will sing songs composed by Bhupen Hazarika.
As reported by several outlets, a biography of Hazarika translated into multiple Indian languages will be released by the Prime Minister during the event, along with a commemorative coin in his honour.
According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Bhupen Hazarika’s music continues to resonate with the people of Assam. He said the artist’s songs captured the voices of workers, boatmen and tea garden communities, reflecting the lives of everyday people.
The public has been invited to participate in the centenary celebration through a registration portal. The process will be overseen by District Commissioners to ensure fair representation across districts. Those selected will receive personalised invitations from the state government, and special guests who had personal interactions with Bhupen Hazarika will also be invited.
For those unable to attend in person, district-level venues will hold live screenings of the event to enable wider participation.
The government has stated that the centenary is not only a formal commemoration but also a reflection of the personal connection many in Assam feel with Hazarika’s work and life.
