Aizawl: The Mizoram Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (MPYCC) has criticised the appointment of Chief Minister Lalduhoma as president of the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), alleging that his remarks explaining the change in the party’s position also amounted to a departure from Christian teachings.
Lalduhoma was appointed ZPM president on Monday as the party announced its new office-bearers for the 2026–28 term. He replaced incumbent Lalliansawta, who has been inactive for some time due to health issues.
The MPYCC’s criticism comes in the context of the ZPM’s earlier position that those holding the portfolio of chief minister or minister would not be elected to party office.
At a ZPM meeting on September 21, Lalduhoma reportedly explained the change by saying, “Even God often changes His covenant” and “Lord Jesus Himself often changed His views.”
The MPYCC described the remarks as a contradiction of Christian teachings and doctrine. It said the statement was particularly inappropriate coming from Lalduhoma, who is also a church elder.
The youth Congress body said Presbyterian doctrine teaches that God is eternal and unchanging in His character, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, truth and love. It argued that invoking God and Jesus to explain a change in the party’s position was contrary to these teachings.
The MPYCC also criticised the ZPM government over what it described as a failure to fulfil its election promises. It said ZPM candidates had sought votes by making commitments before God and the people and asking voters to test their performance.
According to the MPYCC, the party’s decision to appoint Lalduhoma as its president, despite its earlier position regarding ministers holding party posts, amounted to a departure from those commitments.
The organisation alleged that Lalduhoma’s remarks showed disregard for church teachings and demanded that he apologise to the church and the people of Mizoram.
