Agartala: Tension ran high in Bishalgarh under the bordering Sepahijala district of Tripura after a violent clash broke out between two rival groups.
The incident resulted in the death of one person, identified as Rajjak Miah, while around eight others, including a minor child, suffered serious injuries.
The exact reason behind the clash remains unclear. However, local sources claimed that both groups have long-standing enmity stemming from competition in unscrupulous border trade through illegal routes.
The business rivalry between the groups, reportedly from two adjoining areas, was well known to the locals. “What happened on Thursday night was just an outcome of the long-drawn business rivalry,” said a local resident.
According to police, the violence began following a heated altercation between youths from neighbouring localities. The argument quickly escalated into a full-blown physical scuffle. As word spread, more people from both sides rushed to the area, further intensifying the confrontation.
During the clash, one person sustained grave injuries and was found lying on the road, bleeding profusely. His family was immediately informed, and a car was arranged to rush him to the hospital.
In the chaos, the vehicle allegedly struck another person while leaving the scene, resulting in his death on the spot. The deceased was later identified as Rajjak Miah.
Soon after the incident, a large contingent of police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel was deployed in the area to bring the situation under control. A relative of the deceased lodged an FIR at the Bishalgarh Police Station.
“Based on the FIR, police conducted multiple raids but none of the accused persons could be located. The car involved was seized from Bishalgarh hospital. During initial inquiries, we learned that the injured persons were referred to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala,” said Bishalgarh SDPO Dulal Datta.
According to police sources, eight persons were injured in the clash. Some are currently undergoing treatment at the Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Hospital, while four patients have been shifted to GB Pant Hospital for better medical care. Among the injured is a minor child, whose condition is yet to be disclosed.
