Ambubachi Mela 2025: Entry limits, traffic rules announced in Guwahati

As Guwahati prepares to host the annual Ambubachi Mela, authorities have issued a set of detailed guidelines to ensure public safety and smooth management of the religious gathering. The event, which draws thousands of devotees from across the country, will be held at the Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hills.

Between 22 and 25 June, access to Nilachal Hills will be permitted only between 5:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Entry beyond this time will not be allowed under any circumstances, according to official instructions.

To regulate movement and reduce congestion, private vehicles will not be allowed on the hill during the mela. Transport to the temple from the base of the hill will be managed by designated ferry services, reserved solely for essential service personnel.

Given the anticipated crowd and ongoing high temperatures, authorities have strongly advised elderly individuals and infants to refrain from visiting the temple during the peak period.

The Pandu-Kamakhya road will remain closed to general traffic and VIP vehicles throughout the event period. This route will be reserved exclusively for emergency services.

Officials have confirmed that no VIP or special access to the Ambubachi Mela will be granted between 22 and 27 June. All visitors must follow the standard queuing process without exception.

In line with the spiritual nature of the occasion—when the goddess Kamakhya is believed to be in a meditative state—authorities have banned cultural programmes, loudspeakers, and musical processions in and around the temple premises.

General darshan will resume on 26 June. Devotees will be required to assemble at the Bongshi Bagaan Ground from where volunteers will guide them in an orderly manner to the temple complex.

Wearing shoes or sandals beyond the Kamakhya Gate and onto the foothills is strictly prohibited during the mela.

Additional traffic restrictions and diversions will be in effect around the temple and nearby routes, as announced by the Guwahati Traffic Police. In case of emergencies, members of the public may dial 112 for assistance.
