As the world celebrated Earth Day yesterday, the renowned conservation organisation Aarayak commemorated the day by spreading awareness about plastic pollution.
The organisation has organised various outreach programmes for students to raise awareness about the harmful effects of single-use plastics and the importance of reducing their use.
27 students from Kakojan Habi LP School, near the Dehing Patkai National Park, participated in an awareness programme on various aspects of nature and the harmful effects of single-use plastics. The students were also engaged in discussions about plastic waste and the coexistence between humans and elephants.
Another outreach event was also organised for students in the Kachugaon Division of the Raimona National Park’s central range. The programme was jointly organised by Aarayak and the Raimona National Park Authority.
In the West Garo Hills of Meghalaya, 20 students took part in an outreach event organised by Aarayak and the British Asian Trust with support from the Darwin Initiative (Biodiversity Challenge Funds). The event was held to raise awareness about the conflict between humans and wild elephants and the steps being taken to mitigate the conflict.
These two areas of Dibrugarh and West Garo Hills are the most affected by the growing conflict between humans and wild animals, and Aarayak has taken various steps to address this issue.
