Collaborative efforts discussed at Guwahati forum on Foxtail Orchid

An open forum discussing the conservation significance of the Foxtail Orchid was organised in Guwahati by Aaranyak, a leading biodiversity conservation organisation, in collaboration with the Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) and EIACP PC Hub Assam, under the aegis of ASTEC, Government of Assam. The event, part of Aaranyak’s WeForNature outreach initiative, took place at the IEI Assam Centre and featured botanist and conservationist Khyanjeet Gogoi, popularly known as the “Orchid Man of Assam,” as the principal resource person.

The Foxtail Orchid, known for its ecological and cultural importance, is a vital element of biodiversity in Assam. However, threats such as habitat destruction, overexploitation, and climate change have placed this species under considerable stress. The forum aimed to raise awareness about the conservation of the Foxtail Orchid and its economic potential, particularly among students and academics, to inspire collective efforts towards its preservation.

Attendees included faculty and students from the Botany departments of various Guwahati colleges and experts in the field. During his address, Gogoi encouraged young participants to explore opportunities in orchid conservation, highlighting Assam’s rich orchid diversity and the untapped economic potential of these species. He called for prioritised research and systematic documentation to bolster conservation efforts.

Representatives from partnering organisations also emphasised the urgency of orchid conservation. Er Mahesh Borkataky of IEI underscored the critical role of academic institutions in advancing these initiatives. Senior Scientist and Organising Secretary of Aaranyak, Udayan Borthakur, noted Aaranyak’s readiness to collaborate with academic and research institutions on conservation projects. Additionally, Rupam Sankar Baruah from ASTEC outlined several state-level initiatives aimed at restoring and conserving orchid populations.

The event was conceptualised with significant contributions from Dhrubajyoti Kalita, a life member of Aaranyak, and coordinated by Pranab Goswami, Organising Officer of Aaranyak.
