Guwahati: The International Conference on Frontiers in Pure and Applied Physics (ICFPAP-2024) kicked off at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) on Thursday, bringing together scientists from 12 countries to share insights on cutting-edge topics in the field.
Over 250 international and national delegates are participating in the three-day conference, which is being organised by USTM’s Department of Physics in collaboration with the Physics Academy of North-East (PANE). Physics students from USTM are also taking part in the event.
The inaugural session of the conference witnessed the release of the Book of Abstract by Prof. Katsunori Wakabayashi from Japan’s Kwansei Gakuin University. Prof. Wakabayashi’s presentation focused on the electronic and optical properties of materials, a rapidly growing area in condensed matter physics and materials science.
USTM Vice Chancellor Prof. G.D Sharma highlighted the conference’s aim to foster in-depth discussions on the latest advancements, challenges, and prospects in pure and applied physics research.
Other notable speakers at the inaugural session included Prof. Anurup Gohain Borua, Prof. Kushal Kalita, and Prof. A F Santos from Brazil (online). Dr Ali Ovgun from Turkey, Dr Santanu K Maiti from the Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata, Prof. Pankaj A Joshi from Ahmedabad University, and Dr Debashis Banerjee from VECC Kolkata were also present.

The local organising committee chairperson, Dr Nitu Borgohain, emphasised the conference’s role as a platform for experienced and budding researchers to exchange ideas and contribute to the development of new concepts. Convener Dr Mayuri Devi highlighted the conference’s focus on bridging the gap between science and engineering and promoting outcome-based research.
The ICFPAP-2024 aims to provide a platform for sharing cutting-edge ideas, fostering collaborations, and advancing the field of pure and applied physics.
