Guwahati: An awareness programme-cum-nutrition exhibition and recipe competition was organised at Bamunpukhuri Tea Estate Model School in Assam’s Sivasagar district to mark Rashtriya Poshan Maah.

The programme, held under the theme “Hamari Anganwadi, Hamari Jimmedari”, was organised by Bal Raksha Bharat in collaboration with the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Project, Nazira, to promote awareness about balanced diets, nutrition and healthy food practices among children, women and families.

School authorities, students, ICDS officials, Anganwadi workers and women from the tea garden community participated in the programme.

A nutrition exhibition featuring locally available food items was organised as part of the event, highlighting the importance of incorporating nutritious foods into everyday household diets.

Hari Kanta Gogoi, principal of Bamunpukhuri Tea Estate Model School, stressed the importance of nutrition in children’s overall development.

“Nutrition is very essential for the holistic development of children,” he said.

Gogoi also said symptoms such as nausea, headaches and weakness appeared to have become increasingly common among students, and identified inadequate nutritious diets as one of the possible contributing factors. He called for greater awareness among children and families about the importance of a balanced diet.

The chief guest, Dr Roshmi Rekha Saikia, subject matter specialist (Community Science) at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sivasagar, under Assam Agricultural University, spoke about nutritional requirements at different stages of life.

She said nutritional needs begin in infancy and continue throughout life, although the type and quantity of nutrients required vary depending on age and physiological needs.
