Book and scholarship launched at RGU in memory of Zubeen Garg

Assam Royal Global University (RGU) on Tuesday marked the birth anniversary of singer Zubeen Garg with the launch of a commemorative book, a scholarship and a memoriam dedicated to the late cultural icon. The programme was organised by the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Centre for Creativity.

The book, titled Zubeen: Twenty Songs and Seven Portraits, features translations of twenty songs by Arkupal Ra Acharya, a visual gallery drawn from photographs by Stephen Styris and seven essays by writers including Prof Amarjyoti Choudhury, Mitra Phukan, Dr Rakhee Kalita Moral, Dr Palme Borthakur, Ramanuj Dutta Choudhury, Banasmita Das and Rahul Karmakar. The cover has been designed by Muku Madhav Baishya. RGU also released a memoriam titled Zubeen: the Road, the Music, the Life Perspectives, comprising nine articles contributed by university faculty members and edited by Dr Pronami Bhattacharyya.

The event was attended by Chancellor Dr A.K. Pansari, Vice Chancellor Prof A.K. Buragohain, Prof Amarjyoti Choudhury, Executive Editor of The Assam Tribune Ramanuj Dutta Choudhury, and Dr Palme Borthakur, sister of the late singer, along with faculty, students and guests. A Sattriya performance by dancer Prerona Bhuyan and a medley of Zubeen Garg’s songs by RGU students formed part of the tribute.

Speakers recalled Garg’s influence on Assamese music and culture. Prof Choudhury said the initiatives introduced by the university were intended to preserve his artistic legacy. Chancellor Pansari described the singer as someone who connected across generations and said the scholarship and publications would encourage students pursuing creative fields.

Addressing the gathering, Ramanuj Dutta Choudhury reflected on the cultural importance of Garg’s work and said the university’s efforts would help promote heritage and support young talent. Dr Palme Borthakur shared personal memories of her brother, speaking about his energy, compassion and commitment to society.
