Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his visionary leadership, stating that India has witnessed progress across various sectors over the past 12 years.

He said Manipur has particularly benefitted from major initiatives in infrastructure, education, healthcare, sports, connectivity and social welfare, contributing significantly to the State’s development and growth during this period.

Chief Minister Khemchand Singh made the remarks during a press conference held at the Durbar Hall of the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Imphal in connection with the celebration of “12 Years of Trust, Progress and Welfare” under the Narendra Modi-led NDA government.

He said Narendra Modi has become the longest-serving elected Prime Minister of India to date and credited his leadership for ushering in transformative changes across the country.

Addressing the media, Khemchand Singh stated that, recognising the exceptional sporting talent and spirit of athletes in the State, the National Sports University—the first of its kind in the country—was established in Manipur under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi.

On the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Manipur, the Chief Minister said the long-standing demand of the people of the State was fulfilled by the NDA government on December 9, 2019.

He further said that INS Imphal, the largest and most advanced stealth guided missile destroyer in the Indian Navy, was launched and commissioned, marking what he described as a proud moment for the people of Manipur.

Khemchand Singh also highlighted developments in the healthcare sector, stating that, for the first time in Manipur’s history, a medical college was established in the hill district of Churachandpur, calling it a significant milestone.

He added that the railway connectivity project from Jiribam to Tupul and Imphal is targeted for completion by 2028. According to him, the project will connect the State capital with the national capital and provide a major boost to Manipur’s economy.

The Chief Minister further informed that the construction of the new integrated terminal at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport is progressing and is expected to be completed soon.

During the press briefing, Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) stated that India achieved its emissions intensity reduction target of 33-35 per cent from 2005 levels 11 years ahead of schedule. He added that reductions have already exceeded 36 per cent.

Minister (Home) Govindas Konthoujam said border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border is being undertaken on a war footing.

Minister (Tourism) Khuraijam Loken Singh of the National People’s Party (NPP) stated that, in honour of the Manipuri freedom fighters of the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, the Government of India renamed Mount Harriet in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as Mount Manipur in October 2021.

The press briefing was also attended by MLAs Tongbram Robindro Singh, S Premchandra Singh and Thongam Shanti Singh.
