Raghuvanshi murder case: Sonam denies plans to leave Shillong

Shillong: Sonam Raghuvanshi, one of the accused in the Raja Raghuvanshi honeymoon murder case, said she has been complying with all bail conditions and urged the public not to believe rumours as the case remains under trial.

Speaking to EastMojo after appearing before a Shillong court along with her legal aid defence counsels Sudeep Rana and Preeti Pradhan, Sonam declined to comment in detail on the case, citing ongoing legal proceedings. However, she addressed public perception surrounding her and denied reports circulating about her movements.

Asked about speculation that she planned to leave Shillong and return to Indore, Sonam said she had no such plans and would continue to remain in Shillong while the case was being heard.

“My case is ongoing here. Until it is concluded, I will not leave. The trial is currently underway. I only want to appeal to the public not to believe rumours because whatever is being said about me is false,” she said.

She also said she had complied with all conditions imposed by the court and would continue to cooperate with legal proceedings.

The interview also focused on allegations made by Raja Raghuvanshi’s brother, Bipin Raghuvanshi, who has alleged that defence counsel Sudeep Rana helped Sonam escape to Nepal.

Rejecting the allegation, Rana said the claim was false and based on assumptions about his ethnic background.

“Just because I am Nepali does not mean I am from Nepal. I was born and brought up in Shillong, and all my education was completed here,” Rana said.

He added that neither he nor Sonam had left Shillong and pointed to their presence in court as evidence that they were complying with legal requirements.

Rana also provided an update on proceedings related to the supplementary charge sheet filed in the case. According to him, arguments from the prosecution side had been completed and the defence had submitted its response, including arguments concerning the applicability of provisions under the Arms Act against Sonam.

He said the state prosecutor had sought time until Monday to respond to the defence’s submissions and that the matter remained at the hearing stage.

On questions relating to Sonam’s security arrangements, defence counsel Preeti Pradhan declined to comment, saying it would not be appropriate to discuss details of her safety measures while she remained in Shillong and the matter was pending before the court.

The Raja Raghuvanshi murder case has been under trial in Meghalaya, with Sonam Raghuvanshi among the accused. The latest court proceedings were held in Shillong on June 12, where she appeared in person as required under her bail conditions.

Meanwhile , the Meghalaya High Court has reserved its judgment in the petition filed by the state government challenging the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi.

Sonam was granted bail on April 27 but the state government challenged this in the High Court.
