Boko: Residents of Neuldoba village, under the Chamaria revenue circle in Boko, are suffering from severe air pollution caused by the JBI brick industry.
The villagers allege that the smoke and ash emitted from the factory make it difficult for them to breathe, especially at night. They also claim that the pollution disrupts their daily lives.
The villagers’ complaints point to a blatant disregard for environmental regulations by the JBI brick industry. According to the Pollution Control Board, Assam (PCBA), brick kilns must convert to zig-zag or vertical shaft technology to minimize pollution. However, JBI Brick Industry continues to operate using outdated methods.
Furthermore, the industry is located too close to residential areas, violating PCBA guidelines. The factory is situated near a RCC bridge connecting Boko and Neuldoba, two government schools, a masjid, and over 100 families residing within a 500-meter radius. According to the PCBA, brick kilns should be at least 500 meters from any natural water flow, river banks, waterfronts, beels, and lakes.

Adding to the concerns, the JBI brick industry is accused of blocking the Mora Kolohi River for brick production, impacting the aquatic environment and local wildlife. This practice directly contradicts PCBA regulations, which prohibit brick kilns from operating within 500 meters of natural water bodies. The industry is also alleged to be extracting topsoil from the area, which is prohibited within a 500-meter radius to ensure the stability of riverbanks.
Despite an awareness meeting held by the PCBA on August 17, 2024, where guidelines were clearly outlined for brick industry owners, the JBI Brick Industry continues to flout the rules. The meeting, attended by local residents, brick industry owners, and revenue officials, was led by Dr. Arup Kumar Mishra, Chairman of PCBA, and Dr. Shantanu Kumar Dutta, Member Secretary of PCBA.
While the PCBA Bamunigaon office refused to comment on the matter, Chamaria Revenue Circle Officer Nandan Nilotpal Bhagawati advised the villagers to file a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Amingaon.
The JBI brick industry is also alleged to employ child labor, violating labor laws. Chaygaon Labour Inspector Pinki Dhar stated that an investigation into child labor practices in the Boko and Chaygaon areas will be conducted in collaboration with the police and administration.
