Guwahati: Assam recorded a significant decline in maternal and child death cases during the financial year 2023-24, marking an improvement in the state’s health indicators, according to official sources.
A total of 374 maternal death cases were reported in Assam during 2023-24, compared to 510 deaths in 2022-23, indicating a 26.7 percent decline. Child death cases also saw a reduction, with 4,793 deaths reported in 2023-24 against 6,721 in 2022-23, marking a decline of 1,928 deaths or 28.7 percent.
These figures were revealed during the two-day review cum orientation workshop, Swasthya Manthan-12, which concluded on Friday. The workshop was organized by the National Health Mission (NHM), Assam.
The event included a district-wise review meeting to assess the health performance of each district. During the meeting, district-wise gaps were identified, and improvement strategies were discussed in detail. Discussions also focused on ways to enhance the health status of people in the state.
The meeting emphasized the need for further course corrections and support for districts to improve health indicators. Best-performing districts and individuals were awarded in various categories. NHM Assam Mission Director, Dr. M.S. Lakshmi Priya, felicitated state division teams and partner organizations for their dedication to improving the health system.
Participants included joint directors of health services, district programme management units, district programme managers, district data managers, district accounts managers, district community mobilisers, district programme coordinators, and other concerned officials from all districts.
This was the 12th edition of Swasthya Manthan. Previous editions were held in June, August, September, October, and December 2022; and in March, April, June, September, November 2023, and January 2024.
The workshop commenced with the NHM Managing Director presenting an overview of NHM’s performance for 2023-24, appreciating the best-performing districts for their hard work, and encouraging all to strive for better results in the coming years.
Several health department officials, district health teams, and officials from partner organizations attended the meeting.
