Tezpur University raises legal awareness among students

To raise awareness about the rights and responsibilities of children and to promote legal citizenship, a comprehensive legal awareness programme was organised by the Department of Law of Tezpur University on Friday.

More than 200 students from different categories participated in the day-long event. Street plays were performed by second and fourth-semester students of the Master of Laws (LLM) programme about pressing issues such as sexual harassment of minors, child labour, and waste management. These enactments were carefully crafted to raise awareness among students.

The students of the law department also discussed various legal topics such as child labour and the right to education, laws regarding sexual offences against children, and the provision of free legal aid in India, as well as the role of the independent judiciary in upholding justice.

Dr Madhumita Acharjee, Head of the Department, emphasised the importance of the event, saying that it was aimed at bringing students from different age groups together.

Another faculty member of the Department, Dr Gitanjali Ghosh, stressed the significance of informed citizenship and equitable justice. Our goal should be to enhance public awareness of laws and rights regarding children, Dr Ghosh said.
