Dibrugarh: An Assam Rifles post in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district came under attack early Friday morning, a day ahead of Independence Day celebrations.
According to sources, the 21 Assam Rifles post at Tikhak Taipi village near Longvi was attacked at around 3 am. The attack reportedly involved three to four explosions, followed by heavy gunfire that lasted for more than 45 minutes.
Six empty shell casings were later recovered from the side from which the firing was reported.
No casualties or injuries have been officially confirmed so far, and further details are awaited from the authorities.
Longvi is a remote border village in the Jairampur-Nampong area of Changlang district, close to the India-Myanmar border.
Sources said suspected militants opened indiscriminate fire on the Assam Rifles post from across the border, prompting security personnel to retaliate with heavy fire.
“The situation is very tense in the locality. ULFA-I and NSCN(K-YA) might be behind the attack. Both militant outfits had earlier called for a boycott of Independence Day celebrations,” a source said.
Assam Rifles posts in the area have previously been targeted by militant groups operating along the region.
A search operation is underway to track down the suspected attackers, officials said. Security forces have also intensified surveillance in and around the camp following the incident.
The attack took place a day before Independence Day and amid boycott calls issued by the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) and NSCN/GPRN.
