Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Friday submitted memorandums to all 36 elected representatives from the Khasi Hills as part of its efforts to press the legislators to raise the union’s five demands before the state government, ahead of the autumn session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly beginning on August 24.
The KSU said it will also seek to submit the memorandums to the 24 MLAs from the Garo Hills.
Members of the union’s respective units and circles under the constituencies represented by the MLAs took part in the submission of the memorandums.
The KSU said elected representatives have a responsibility to raise issues concerning employment opportunities and the problems faced by the Khasi community.
The union further said it would continue its agitation until the state government fully implements the demands it has placed before it.
As part of its ongoing agitation, the KSU has decided to hold a sit-in demonstration at the statue of U Kiang Nangbah opposite Shillong Civil Hospital on August 24 from 11 am.
The union will also organise sit-in demonstrations across seven districts of the Khasi Hills on August 25.
However, the KSU said it will not organise any agitation programme on August 22 to avoid inconveniencing candidates appearing for the Lower Division Assistant (LDA) examination conducted by the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC).
The KSU said the decision was taken to ensure that candidates are not affected by its programmes.
