Guwahati: RCML organised a 4-Day Workshop on Singpho Language and Folksongs Documentation from November 11-14, 2024, at the RIWATCH campus.

Held from November 11-14 at the RIWATCH campus, the workshop aimed to authenticate data for publication and create audio-visual recordings for research and digital archiving.

The workshop saw the participation of several resource persons from the Singpho community, including Prahlad Kanmai, BRCC Miao; Ongdu Lagang, APO Bordumsa; Indiengam Singpho; Jamai Kumin; and Pisi Kha Tinki.

RIWATCH Executive Director Vijay Swami expressed gratitude to the resource persons for their dedication to preserving their language and culture. He assured them of RIWATCH’s continued support in promoting and safeguarding Singpho heritage.

Dr. Mechek Sampar Awan, in his address, emphasised the importance of preserving indigenous languages, asserting that no language is inferior or superior to another. He highlighted the workshop’s objectives, which included creating illustrated children’s books focusing on the Singpho language and compiling a book on Singpho folksongs. These initiatives aim to promote and preserve the linguistic heritage of the Singpho community in Arunachal Pradesh.

Dr. Vilhousienuo Neli, RCML Research Officer and workshop convenor, stressed the significance of the workshop in preserving the Singpho community’s cultural heritage and strengthening the collaboration between RIWATCH and the Singpho Development Society (SDS). She emphasised the importance of such initiatives in safeguarding indigenous languages and cultural expressions for future generations.
