Agartala: In a groundbreaking initiative, the Tulasikhar RD Block in Tripura’s Khowai District has repurposed non-biodegradable waste to create public infrastructure. A significant quantity of discarded plastic bottles was used to construct eco-friendly toilets at the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) camp in Kalabagan. The project, which features a four-room toilet structure, has been widely appreciated as a sustainable approach to plastic waste management.
“A plastic waste bank was set up in the block area through Self-Help Groups (SHGs), where used plastic bottles were collected and stored. These were then creatively repurposed into the construction of the toilet,” said Tulasikhar Block Development Officer Obed L. Darlong.
The initiative serves as a model for recycling non-biodegradable materials to create essential infrastructure while addressing environmental challenges, he added.
Officials believe the toilet project could inspire similar efforts across the state. “This project demonstrates the potential to turn waste into resources, aligning with government efforts to reduce plastic usage and promote sustainable development,” an official remarked.
A detailed report on the project will soon be submitted to the Tripura government, alongside a proposal to establish plastic waste banks statewide. The initiative has drawn praise from various quarters of society as a step toward eco-friendly innovation.
The project is currently under construction and continues to attract attention for its innovative approach to sustainable development.
