Agartala: The Government of Tripura is eagerly awaiting the Centre’s approval for special funds to compensate for losses incurred during the devastating floods in August. Flash floods swept through almost all districts of the state, with Gomati district bearing the brunt of the damage.
Floodwaters inundated croplands, residential areas, and business establishments across the state, severely impacting public infrastructure such as roads. According to the state government’s records, total losses from the disaster are estimated to exceed Rs 15,000 crore.
A senior official from the state’s Revenue Department confirmed that an estimate worth Rs 7,000 crore was submitted to the Inter-ministerial Central delegation that visited Tripura in the aftermath of the floods.
“The estimates were prepared in line with government guidelines, which specify methods for calculating losses and setting compensation amounts. During the Central team’s visit, we submitted a comprehensive Rs 7,000 crore estimate for approval. These funds are crucial to help mitigate the impact of the floods and restore damaged infrastructure,” the official told EastMojo.
While the Central delegation reviewed the situation once during their visit, a second review of the proposals is now scheduled. Sources indicate that a team of senior officials from Tripura is headed to Delhi to participate in the review meeting.
Beyond individual losses, extensive damage to government facilities and permanent public infrastructure has compounded the challenges for the state. Official reports from various departments reveal severe sectoral impacts. The agriculture sector alone recorded losses surpassing Rs 2,000 crore, while the power sector suffered damage valued at over Rs 250 crore.
Education infrastructure also faced substantial setbacks, with an estimated Rs 262 crore in damages. Public Works Department (PWD) Secretary Kiran Gitte noted that landslides caused significant road damage across numerous locations, estimating that restoration costs would exceed Rs 2,000 crore.
In the Rural Development sector, the floods wiped out several houses constructed under the Prime Minister’s housing schemes. The department has formally requested the Centre to authorize new housing for affected families under the prescribed norms.
