Agartala: Tripura CPIM State Secretary and Leader of the Opposition, Jitendra Choudhury, expressed regret on Sunday that his party has lost 67,000 active members over the past seven years. According to Choudhury, the current membership stands at around 38,000, down from 98,000 in 2018.
“Had the 8th Left Front government formed in 2018, the party membership would have likely reached 1.5 lakh. However, being out of power for the past seven years has significantly reduced our numbers,” Choudhury said during a gathering of party workers in Udaipur, organized in memory of late Sitaram Yechury.
Choudhury highlighted that while the party managed to enroll 7,500 new members during this period, the net loss stands at 67,000. “This is a matter of great regret, but our biggest concern is that even among the 38,000 current members, many are not actively participating in party programs,” he said.
Reflecting on the first Left Front government in 1978, he noted that the party’s membership was just 6,000 when it assumed office with a majority of 56 seats. Most members at that time, Choudhury said, came from poor and marginalized communities, yet their dedication to the party was unparalleled.
Calling for self-reflection, Choudhury urged party workers to identify their shortcomings and rebuild the party from the grassroots. He announced plans to hold 4,500 conferences across all 4,000 branches, 300 local committees, 24 divisional committees, and 8 district committees to rejuvenate the party’s structure and strengthen its functioning.
