Agartala: The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has banned the use of DJ sets during Durga Puja idol immersions starting this year.
Mayor Dipak Majumder announced that Puja organisers in the capital have been instructed to avoid using any loud music equipment, particularly DJ sets, during the immersion process. The decision was made following a joint meeting with law enforcement, civil administration, and Puja organizers in Agartala.
“This is a conscious decision made in consideration of public sentiment. Many people believe that the use of DJ sets distorts the traditional and cultural aspects of idol immersion. All Puja organisers have been asked to follow the new guidelines,” Majumder told EastMojo.
The AMC had earlier issued a 15-point guideline for Puja organisers, with a strong focus on safety protocols for pandal visitors.
“Despite our best efforts, we were unable to stop DJ sets during Ganesh Chaturthi immersions. However, many Puja organizers have accepted our proposal and supported a more cultural approach to the immersion,” the Mayor added.
To ensure a smooth immersion process, the AMC has arranged for traditional drummers (Dhakis) and a team of women dressed in traditional attire to perform ululation at the immersion ghats. Police and AMC volunteers will assist community clubs during the immersion process.
A gala cultural event, “Mayer Gomon” (Farewell to Mother), will take place on October 14, featuring a procession organized by the AMC, Tripura’s Information and Cultural Affairs Department, and the West Tripura district administration. The event, proposed by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, will be held in front of the royal palace in the heart of the city.
