Agartala: Heavy storm accompanied by rain and lightning ravaged different areas of Tripura on Sunday leaving one person dead, an official of Tripura State Disaster Management authority has said.
Apart from that, electric poles were uprooted in different locations, 160 houses crumbled down and large trees came crashing down as the stormy wind lashed out the isolated locations.
The deceased person is identified as Shyamal Debnath (45), a resident of North Rajnagar under Udaipur in the Gomati district of Tripura. Debnath was a rubber garden worker by profession. He was in the rubber garden for collection of latex when the lightning struck leading to his death.
He was immediately shifted to hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. “He died on the spot. When we brought him to the hospital, the doctors declared him dead,” a local who came to the hospital with the deceased told reporters at Udaipur.
According to him, Debnath in accordance with his daily morning schedule reached the rubber garden for collection of the latex. At that point in time, the lightning struck which led to his demise.
He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.
Meanwhile, the stormy wind also affected the GBP hospital. A fifty-year-old tree collapsed and blocked the main entrance of the hospital. However, the prompt intervention of the locals cleared the road within a few hours.
A detailed statement issued by the revenue department said a total of 37 houses were damaged in the wind while 125 houses suffered severe damages. As many as 454 houses were partially damaged.
