Agartala: Tension ran high in Kailashahar’s Magroli village under the Unakoti district of Tripura after allegations of the forceful abduction of a Hindu minor girl surfaced against a Muslim youth. Police arrested the accused youth from his residence late on Tuesday night with the support of local villagers and community elders.
The accused, identified as Jaheed Hossain, reportedly kidnapped a 14-year-old minor girl who hails from the adjacent Boulabasa area. However, Hossain denied the charges in his statement before the media, claiming that the girl came with him out of her own free will and that he never applied any force to marry her.
Police sources stated that the father of the minor girl lodged an FIR with the Irani police station accusing Hossain of forcefully kidnapping his daughter. He also mentioned the name of one of his associates who was also involved in the kidnapping.
Prompt action was taken by the police, and a team led by Kailashahar womens’ police Station OC Ripita Bhattacharjee rushed to the Magroli village and rescued the minor girl, reuniting her with her family.
However, locals and right-wing bodies protested against the police’s decision not to take any action against the accused person. Protests were staged in front of the police station, lasting for hours.
Later, SDPO Kailashahar Jayanta Karmakar intervened and assured the protestors that the accused would be arrested within 24 hours. Keeping his promise, Karmakar ensured Hossain’s arrest.
Simmering tension is brewing in both localities following the arrest.
