Agartala: A Bangladeshi smuggler was shot dead, and another managed to flee with bullet wounds as clashes erupted between smugglers and border guarding forces at Maguruli village of Gournagar Block under the Kailashahar subdivision in Unakoti district, Tripura.
According to sources in the BSF, some Bangladeshi nationals sneaked into the bordering village with the intention of smuggling. To thwart the smuggling bid, BSF officials tried to chase them away.
Reportedly, the smugglers resorted to violence and began pelting stones. Faced with no other option, BSF troops opened fire on the intruders. One of the smugglers sustained a fatal bullet injury, leading to his death on the spot. Meanwhile, one of his accomplices successfully crossed the border with bullet wounds.
BSF trooper Mohan Singh suffered a head injury due to the stone pelting. The incident occurred around noon.
The mortal remains of the Bangladeshi national were taken to the local hospital.
Sources in the BSF revealed that as many as five companies of the border guarding forces have been deployed for election duty. “The disruptive elements are attempting to take advantage of the situation. This incident is a consequence of those attempts,” added a BSF source.
Meanwhile, in two separate joint operations, the BSF, in collaboration with other security agencies, apprehended three Rohingya migrants from Agartala railway station and seized Brown Sugar worth over one crore rupees from Kumarghat railway station in Unakoti district.
“On 17.03.2024, the Anti Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of BSF, in a joint operation with RPF and GRP, apprehended three Rohingyas from Agartala railway station. Acting on specific information, the joint ops party apprehended Hamid Hussain (23), Abdur Rasik (24), and Mohammed Yusuf. All are residents of Myanmar. Further legal action is being initiated,” stated a BSF press release.

“On 17.03.2024, BSF, in a joint operation with RPF, seized 290.50 grams of suspected brown sugar worth Rs 1,45,25,00 at Kumarghat railway station from the general coach of the Silchar Agartala express.
The consignment was packed in 06 soap cases kept in two packets. The soap cases were wrapped as gift packets to avoid suspicion or detection by security personnel. No apprehensions could be made as the packets were seized in abandoned condition,” added another press statement.
