Agartala: Amid rapid political developments surrounding the demand for a constitutional solution, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee President Asish Kumar Saha on Wednesday slammed the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party for deceiving tribal voters. Saha said the BJP had promised to have the 125th constitutional amendment Bill passed once voted to power.
“This was in their poll manifesto. But the reality is otherwise. The BJP has been in power for the last six years in Tripura, yet no leader of the saffron party speaks clearly about whether the central government is willing to pass the Bill or not,” said Saha.
Extending his moral support to the call for “fast unto death” agitation by TIPRA Motha’s top leader Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, the Tripura Congress leader said, “We can’t oppose a legitimate movement. The tribal society has all the rights to organize agitations seeking constitutional safeguards for them. The Congress party has always maintained a progressive view on these issues.
When the UPA II was in power, the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill was first drafted. Before the Bill could be passed, the BJP wrested power in the Centre and sent the legislation to cold storage. In the last ten years, we haven’t heard anything on this topic except for a couple of meetings here and there.”

On the alliance talks, the Tripura Congress leader said, “This is the prerogative of the Congress high command. We spoke to party leaders and whatever we discussed in the meeting was placed before the Congress high command. Now the ball is in the court of AICC.”
The senior Tripura Congress leader was speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a party meeting. “We are organising a one-day conference of party workers at Agartala Town Hall. All the district and block-level workers are attending the meeting to finalize the preparations,” he added.
