Aizawl: In a remarkable turn of events, former Chief Minister Zoramthanga appears set to continue his uninterrupted presidency of the Mizo National Front (MNF) as the last date for filing nominations for office bearers concluded on Wednesday. The filing of nominations revealed that Zoramthanga is the sole contender for the position of president, ensuring his uncontested continuation in the coveted role.
The nomination committee, responsible for overseeing the election process, officially submitted the nominations to the Returning Officer, Dr. Ramdinthara. To the surprise of many, no other individual submitted nominations for the position of president, solidifying Zoramthanga’s position at the helm of the MNF.
Apart from the presidency, the official candidates for other key positions were also announced. Health Minister Dr. R. Lalthangliana has been nominated for the position of Senior Vice President. Two official candidates, Lalchhandama Ralte and Vanlalzawma, will vie for the role of Vice President, while Lalruatkima is the sole nominee for the position of Treasurer.
The scrutiny of these nominations is scheduled to take place on Thursday, after which candidates will have the option to withdraw until March 2.
It’s worth noting that Zoramthanga’s return to the presidency comes after his resignation in December 2023. The veteran politician had stepped down from the role of MNF president following a 33-year tenure after the party faced defeat in the assembly polls. Zoramthanga had cited moral responsibility for the electoral setback, a move that surprised many given his long and influential association with the party.
