Agartala: Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Tuesday branded the waterway connectivity between Tripura’s Sonamura and Bangladesh’s Daudkandi as a “revolution” in the connectivity sector and attributed the development to PM Modi’s Act East policy.
The 93-kilometer waterway from Sonamura to Daudkandi is a milestone for Tripura’s connectivity.
“To enhance bilateral maritime trade between Bangladesh and neighboring states, the government of India has undertaken various initiatives. Previously, goods between the two countries were transported via ships from ports such as Colombo, Singapore, or Kuala Lumpur. Now, Indian products can be transported to Chittagong port in Bangladesh, facilitating trade in the Northeast region,” the Minister said.
He was speaking at an event organised at Sonamura on the occasion of the virtual inauguration of the newly constructed Inland Waterways Transport Terminal. Union Minister for Shipping, Ports and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the terminal.

“Kolkata’s cargo ships can utilize multiple routes for transportation via Chittagong and Mongla, to the Northeast region. Bangladesh has granted permission for the following routes: Chittagong/Mongla to Agartala (Tripura), Chittagong/Mongla to Dawki (Meghalaya), Chittagong/Mongla to Sutarkandi (Assam), Chittagong/Mongla to Srimantapur (Tripura). Through the ‘Act East’ policy, the government of India has strengthened connectivity with neighboring countries in the region,” the Minister said.
“A recent report has analyzed the possibility of better connectivity with Southeast Asian countries, and Japan, based on a collaborative framework. In this context, special attention has been paid to the northeastern region of India as a carrier of such efforts. The state and the central government have put impetus in the expansion of connectivity including roadways, railways, airways, and waterways,” he added.
