Agartala: In a significant development, Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Thursday launched Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana, a scheme that provides universal health coverage to the people.
The scheme provides parallel benefits of Prime Minister Jan Arogya Yojana and covers the population that is not entitled to the Ayushman Bharat scheme providing health insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh for each family.
Addressing the event, Dr Saha said, “Tripura is the first among small-state category states to roll out such a scheme. This scheme has four salient features that make it exceptional in delivering benefits to the public. This scheme follows the pattern of PM-JAY that provides rupees five lakh insurance cover to the beneficiaries. With the launch of this scheme, the population that missed out on the cover of PM-JAY was brought under CM JAY. Now every family of the state is entitled to rupees five lakh insurance benefit per year.”
According to the Chief Minister, a whopping amount of Rs 104 crore is allocated for the scheme to cover 4.15 lakh families in the state. “The government employees can also access the benefits of the scheme if they let go of the annual medical allowance provided by the state,” the Chief Minister explained.
Right now, government employees receive Rs 6,000 as an annual medical allowance.

“All the transactions would be cashless for indoor services. There are altogether 2,600 private hospitals empanelled with the scheme apart from government-owned health facilities. Free of cost medicine would be provided to the patient for 15 days after discharge,” Dr Saha pointed out.
Speaking at the event, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte said, “This is an inclusive scheme that provides benefits to each and every citizen. All the medical conditions are covered under this scheme. Barring people who are already enrolled under schemes for construction workers, armed forces etc. all are eligible for the benefits.”
