Sunil Kalai, a multi-talented individual, has made a name for himself as a photographer, filmmaker, social activist, and founder of Mondra, an agricultural commune based in a village in Tripura. Despite his various pursuits, Kalai believes in following his passions rather than being defined by labels. Currently a faculty member at the Mass Communication and Journalism Department of Tripura Central University, he has dedicated much of his energy to creating a self-sustaining agricultural model that benefits his community.
Inspired by his mentor Hasina Kharbhih, the Founder of Impulse Network, Kalai’s vision of contributing to a larger cause led him to agriculture. After nearly three years of navigating bureaucratic hurdles to register his NGO, he established Mondra on his ancestral land in 2018. The commune cultivates rubber, tea, and areca nuts, alongside practising horticulture and maintaining fisheries.
Mondra operates on a collective ownership model, with each member working on the land free of cost. The commune’s success has inspired neighbouring villagers to start their own initiatives, such as pineapple plantations. Today, the land and its produce boast an estimated valuation of ₹2 crore, showcasing the viability of this self-sustaining model.
The COVID-19 pandemic reinforced Kalai’s commitment to self-reliance. “Crisis and conflict give birth to innovation,” he says, adding that being self-sufficient is key to overcoming challenges. During the lockdown, Mondra played a crucial role in supporting the local community by distributing dry ration kits to those in need, underscoring the importance of such models during times of adversity.
Kalai credits social media, particularly Facebook, for expanding the reach of Mondra. The platform has connected him with like-minded individuals, potential collaborators, and government officials who have offered support for the commune through agricultural schemes.

Beyond networking, social media has been an educational tool for Kalai. It introduced him to similar models, such as the Aranya initiative in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, as well as innovative agricultural practices in Bangkok and Thailand. This exposure has enriched his vision for Mondra and its potential.
Kalai encourages young entrepreneurs to adopt an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset. “Set a goal and work hard to achieve it,” he advises, urging others to create something that ensures sustainability for themselves and their communities. For Kalai, passion and perseverance are the cornerstones of success.
