India’s hopes of overcoming their goal-scoring struggles will rest on the shoulders of veteran striker Sunil Chhetri when they face Afghanistan in the return leg of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier on Tuesday.
Chhetri, who will be appearing in his 150th international match, will be looking to make his landmark game memorable at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium. The 39-year-old talisman has played a pivotal role for India over the years, earning 149 international caps, scoring 93 goals, and lifting 11 trophies.
India’s last goal came in November 2023 against Kuwait, and the team will be eager to end their goalless run against Afghanistan. Chhetri’s experience and leadership will be crucial if India is to secure a victory and enhance their chances of reaching the third round of the World Cup qualifiers.
While Chhetri is expected to deliver, his teammates will also need to step up and contribute to the team’s success. Igor Stimac’s side currently sits second in the group with four points from three games, one ahead of Kuwait.
To advance to the third round, India will need at least four points from their next three matches against Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Qatar. The Blue Tigers will need to improve their attacking play and create more chances if they want to stay in contention for a place in the third round.

Stimac emphasised the importance of the match and expressed his hope that Chhetri would make it a memorable occasion. “We hope our captain will make it memorable on March 26 for all Indian fans and himself,” he said.
