Gangtok: A massive rally in support of the Women’s Reservation Bill was held in Gangtok on Thursday, with over 10,000 participants from across Sikkim taking part.

The rally began at Deorali Truck Stand and culminated at Paljor Stadium, with participants carrying the national flag and expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government for passing the legislation in Parliament.

Several women legislators, along with male members of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, were present and extended their support to the Bill.

Raj Kumari Thapa, Deputy Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, said that the parliamentary discussions held from April 16 to 18 on the implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, enacted in 2023, were highly significant.

Addressing the gathering, she noted that the response to the legislation had been overwhelming, with participation exceeding expectations.

She said the turnout of women and young girls was nearly double what had been anticipated, reflecting strong support for 33 per cent reservation in the Legislative Assembly and Lok Sabha.

Describing the Act as one of the most important democratic decisions of the 21st century, Thapa said empowering women would strengthen both the nation and the state, contributing to the vision of a developed India and the progress of Sikkim.

She expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister, stating that his vision for women’s empowerment would strengthen the country’s global standing. She added that the rally was organised to thank the government and express collective support for the legislation.

Pamin Lepcha, MLA from Gnathang-Machong, said the Bill, though passed, is currently under parliamentary discussion and expressed hope that it would be implemented soon after the Census.

Speaking on the sidelines, she described the legislation as historic and said the large turnout reflected women’s enthusiasm and optimism.

Lepcha added that women in Sikkim already feel empowered, and the provision of at least 33 per cent reservation as a mandatory rule has further strengthened this sentiment.

She said the measure would ensure women’s representation and expressed hope for greater participation of capable women leaders in upcoming elections.
