Guwahati: Two Sikkim scholars, Bibek Limbu and Ingsa Yonghang Limboo, have been selected to present their research at the 26th Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA) Biennial Conference, one of the most respected academic forums on Asian studies globally.

The conference is being organised by Deakin University in collaboration with the Association for Asian Studies and will be held at Deakin University’s Geelong Waterfront campus from June 29 to July 2, 2026.

Their selection follows a rigorous, month-long scrutiny process involving applications from scholars across the world.

The conference, themed “Beyond Borders: Reimagining Asian Societies in and Across a Shifting World”, aims to foster critical discussions on contemporary transformations within Asian societies and their global intersections.

The selection process was overseen by a distinguished international panel of academicians. The committee included Dr Elora Shehabuddin, Professor in the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and Director of the Chowdhury Center for Bangladesh Studies, who holds a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and a PhD in Politics from Princeton University.

The panel also featured Dr David Hundt, Associate Professor of International Relations at Deakin University, who holds a PhD in Political Science and Government from the University of Queensland, along with other eminent scholars committed to advancing global academic exchange.

Being chosen to present at the ASAA Biennial Conference is regarded as a significant academic achievement for the Sikkim scholars, as the platform brings together leading researchers, policymakers and intellectuals from across continents to engage with pressing issues related to Asia’s political, social and cultural transformations.

The selection of Bibek Limbu and Ingsa Yonghang Limboo to represent India and Sikkim at the conference highlights the growing contribution of Indian scholars to international academic discourse and underscores the relevance of their research within broader global conversations on Asia.
