Nagaland Congress observes Black Day, condemns alleged mistreatment of opposition leaders

Kohima: The Dimapur District Congress Committee (DCC) observed Black Day at Congress Bhavan in Dimapur on Thursday, condemning the alleged assault, detention and mistreatment of opposition leaders and demanding accountability from the Election Commission of India (ECI).

In a statement, the DCC said the protest reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the Constitution, democratic rights and free and fair elections.

“You may suppress our voices, but you cannot silence democracy,” the committee said.

Earlier on September 28, the District Congress Committees (DCCs) of Dimapur, Mokokchung, Wokha, Peren, Longleng, Noklak and Tuensang held protests across their respective districts against what the Congress has described as the alleged high-handedness and arbitrary functioning of Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar.

The protests were organised as part of the nationwide programme of the Indian National Congress calling for accountability in the functioning of the Election Commission of India and raising serious concerns over decisions relating to electoral rolls and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

The Congress has demanded the immediate resignation and removal of the Chief Election Commissioner, along with an independent review of decisions and electoral-roll changes taken under his tenure.
