Guwahati: Northeastern India’s rivers, cascading through lush landscapes and cradled by biodiversity hotspots, have long been a haven for unique life forms. Recently, two remarkable discoveries have brought global attention to this region’s ecological significance. Researchers from the Zoological Survey of India have identified two new freshwater fish species: Garra magnarostrum, a cyprinid from Arunachal Pradesh’s Ranga River, and Glyptothorax chakpiensis, a catfish from Manipur’s Chakpi River. These findings underscore the intricate and often hidden biodiversity of these dynamic river systems.

The Discovery of Garra magnarostrum

Described by Pratima Singh and her colleagues from the Zoological Survey of India, Garra magnarostrum was uncovered in the fast-flowing Ranga River in Arunachal Pradesh, a tributary of the Brahmaputra. This species is notable for its elongated snout adorned with multilobed proboscises and multicuspid tubercles. Measuring 136 mm in length, the fish exhibits features that are adaptations to its rapid, rocky habitat—from a streamlined body to a small gular disc aiding adhesion to submerged surfaces.

The presence of many small budding tubercles on the ventral side of the transverse lobe of the snout further distinguishes Garra magnarostrum from its congeners. It also has 33 lateral line scales, 11 predorsal scales, and 13 circumpeduncular scales—an anatomical combination unique among its group. Its dorsal fin, with one simple and eight branched rays, enhances its hydrodynamic efficiency in turbulent waters. This discovery enriches the understanding of the diverse adaptations seen in cyprinid fish across the Brahmaputra basin.

The species name, derived from Latin words meaning “large snout,” reflects its distinguishing morphological trait. Its discovery adds to the rich tapestry of cyprinids in the region, particularly those uniquely adapted to the challenging hill-stream environments of the Brahmaputra basin.

Meet Glyptothorax chakpiensis

Not far from Arunachal Pradesh, in Manipur’s Chakpi River, another ichthyological treasure surfaced. Glyptothorax chakpiensis, a new sisorid catfish, was identified in the Chindwin River drainage. Characterized by its lanceolate thoracic adhesive apparatus, slender body, and striking yellowish stripes, this catfish exemplifies the specialized features enabling survival in swiftly flowing streams. The adhesive apparatus, with its almost-enclosed median depression, allows the fish to cling to rocky substrates against strong currents. Its distinct appearance includes a short nasal barbel that does not reach the anterior margin of the orbit and a caudal fin adorned with triangular dark blotches at the base. This species is further distinguished by its slender body, with a depth of 10.4-13.1% standard length at the dorsal-fin origin and 11.2-12.0% at the anus. The presence of two longitudinal yellowish stripes on its body adds to its visual appeal and sets it apart from other species in the region.

The name honours the Chakpi River, highlighting the importance of preserving its pristine aquatic ecosystems. The discovery of Glyptothorax chakpiensis emphasizes the biological richness of the Chindwin drainage and its significance as a habitat for unique fish species.

A Biodiversity Hotspot Under Threat

These discoveries are more than just academic milestones; they highlight the extraordinary ecological wealth of northeastern India. The Brahmaputra and Chindwin drainages, known for their fast-flowing rivers, rocky terrains, and diverse microhabitats, serve as cradles of evolution for species uniquely adapted to their environments.

However, these ecosystems face mounting threats. Unregulated development, habitat modification, pollution, and climate change pose significant risks to their delicate balance. For species like Garra magnarostrum and Glyptothorax chakpiensis, even minor disruptions could mean habitat loss and population decline.

Protecting these rivers and their inhabitants requires a multi-pronged approach, involving local communities, policymakers, and international conservation efforts.

These fish, adapted to thrive in fast-flowing streams, are ambassadors for the unseen richness of northeastern India’s aquatic ecosystems. Their survival—and countless other species—depends on our commitment to preserving the rivers they call home.
