Guwahati: In the mist-shrouded rivers of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, scientists have uncovered remarkable new chapters in India’s biodiversity story. A new species of mayfly, Platybaetis arunachalensis, has been discovered in the pristine streams of Arunachal Pradesh, while Platybaetis ueno, previously known only from Nepal, has made its Indian debut in the rivers of Nagaland.
The research, conducted by a team led by scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), was published in the journal Zootaxa. These discoveries highlight not only the ecological richness of Northeast India but also its potential as a global biodiversity hotspot.
A New Species Amid the Rapids of Arunachal Pradesh
In the rugged Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, where the Siang River carves its path through emerald-green forests, researchers found the larvae of Platybaetis arunachalensis. Thriving in fast-flowing tributaries, these tiny creatures exemplify nature’s adaptability to harsh environments. Preferring rocky surfaces sprayed by cascading waters, the larvae are sentinels of water quality, thriving only in undisturbed ecosystems.

Found near Yingkiong town in streams surrounded by towering boulders and dense canopies, this discovery not only adds a new species to the genus Platybaetis but also underscores the untouched beauty of Arunachal Pradesh’s aquatic habitats. The species is named after Arunachal Pradesh, where it was discovered.
A Rare Find in Nagaland’s Sacred Tepuiki River
Across the hills of Nagaland, the Tepuiki River flows near Poilwa village, cherished by the Zeliang-Naga tribe as a sacred resource. Here, researchers identified Platybaetis uenoi, a species last recorded in Nepal’s Himalayan foothills nearly 70 years ago. Community-led conservation practices, including prohibitions on fishing and destructive activities, have allowed aquatic life in the Tepuiki to thrive, making it an ideal refuge for this elusive mayfly.
The larvae were also discovered in the Dikhu tributary. These rivers, characterized by crystal-clear waters, gravel beds, and a vibrant mix of aquatic life, extend the known range of P. uenoi by over 1,000 kilometers, bridging the ecological gap between Nepal and India.
Mayflies play a vital role in freshwater ecosystems, recycling nutrients, serving as food for predators, enhancing ecosystem productivity, and aiding in sediment processing. Their presence is also an indicator of water quality. The discoveries of these species emphasize the health of their environments but also highlight the fragility of these habitats, which face threats from deforestation, pollution, and climate change.
The discoveries in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland demonstrate the untapped potential of Northeast India’s biodiversity. Researchers stress the need for molecular studies and further exploration to uncover hidden species and understand their ecological roles. Local communities, like the Zeliang-Naga tribe, exemplify how traditional conservation practices can protect ecosystems for generations to come.
